Designing and crafting one of a kind custom jewelry is where our passion lies.  Working with clients to create a new and unique piece that they will own and cherish for life and watching their excitement grow as they see that design take shape is what makes it exciting for us to come to the studio each day. The custom design process is often thought to be difficult to understand and out of reach. At Douglas Fine Jewelry we strive to engage and educate you throughout the process.  It’s our goal to take you through this experience seamlessly and for you to be comfortable every step of the way.

The following is a generalized outline of the steps involved in a typical custom jewelry project. This can vary depending on the nature of the design and the method of manufacture appropriate to that design.  This process can take two to eight weeks depending on the complexity of the project.

1) The initial Design Consultation is always free and includes:
Initial rough sketches based on an interactive discussion of the clients’ desires and design preferences with consideration for lifestyle. (I.e. Tall prongs don’t work well for nurses or others that frequently wear gloves)

Talking about budget and costs with reference to gemstones, metals and processes.

2) Finalize design and begin the manufacturing process:
Once the general direction of the design is clear we will make detailed scale drawings by hand or in 3-D CAD (Computer Aided Design) software for final approval.

A deposit of 50% of the estimated cost of the project is required at this point to move forward with CAD and/or shop work.

3) CAD approval: (When Appropriate)
Not all designs call for the use of Computer Aided Design and Manufacture (CAD
CAM). Those that do give our clients the opportunity to preview their design rendered three dimensionally in CAD software called Rhino from McNeel North America.

Any needed changes are easily made in the virtual model at this stage before moving forward with milling the wax model on our 4-axis CNC milling machine from Roland. CAD drawings can also be emailed to our out of town clients.

4) Wax model approval:
Whether carved by hand or on the CNC mill you now have the chance to see, handle and even try on the wax model of your design, usually with the actual gems to be set, in place. Minor changes can be made at this point to ensure that the final product is exactly what you expect.

5) Final Step:
Fabricate, cast, assemble, set stones and finish. Time to wear your new treasure!
