Oregon Sunstone is one of the rarest and most stunning of gems.  Although found in other parts of the world, they are rarely gem grade.  Sunstones from the high desert of southeastern Oregon are uncommon in their clarity, size, composition and range of colors.  Individual in their beauty, no two stones are exactly alike, offering a unique and personal alternative to traditional gemstones.

Oregon Sunstone is a feldspar crystal formed in molten lava and then discharged onto the surface of the earth by a volcano.    Sunstone is a transparent feldspar with a wide color range - clear and pale yellow to shades of red, green and pink - with striking shades varying in between, and occasional combinations of several colors in one stone.  A striking attribute of Sunstones - a shimmery flash that appears within some stones - comes from the unusual combination of copper and feldspar unique to Oregon.  When stones are viewed in just the right direction, a pink to red metallic shimmer flashes from within the stone. This effect, called "schiller," is caused by light reflecting from tiny parallel copper platelets, contained in varying amounts and sizes, suspended in the Sunstone.

Oregon Sunstone is both natural and untreated and was officially named the Oregon State Gemstone by Governor Neil Goldschmidt and the Oregon legislature in 1987. Since that time, Oregon Sunstone has been gaining popularity with collectors, artists, and jewelry lovers everywhere. It is now one of the leading gemstones mined in the U.S.  Each Oregon Sunstone is much more than a pretty stone or item of jewelry. It is a piece of art, a piece of history, and a piece of Oregon.
